A Smart TV is a television set with integrated internet capabilities. These devices will usher television into the digital age, as modern television viewers are moving away from traditional broadcast media in favor of online interactive media, Internet TV, over-the-top content and on-demand streaming media.
Smart TVs are designed to extend the reach of multimedia content directly to the television set in as efficient a manner possible and enable the viewer access both broadcast digital content and Internet multimedia content with a single remote. In addition, a broader range of content is provided, ranging from traditional broadcast TV, video on-demand and catch-up TV service. Smart TVs also enable access to email and other internet services such as Facebook, Twitter and Youtube.
Many electronics companies, such as LG, Panasonic, Toshiba, Sharp and Samsung are producing and selling Smart TVs. However, for a few years, Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft’s XBox 360 have included numerous Smart TV features, particularly internet access and on-demand video from services such as Netflix and YouTube. Perhaps it was these innovations in home video gaming, coupled with the increasing presence of digital video recording services provided by Comcast and TiVo that inspired these electronic companies to bring these amenities to the consumer in a neat self-contained package, complete with high-definition sound and picture quality.
